Some people clench or grind their teeth, often at night or when stressed, and notice jaw ache, headaches on waking or a jaw that looks wider than it used to. A consultation works out what's behind it and what, if anything, is suitable.
The concern people describe
It's often described as “I wake up with a sore jaw” or “my dentist says I'm grinding my teeth.” It's assessed individually: your history, your jaw and how it affects your day.
Dentist first?
A dentist is often the right first stop, especially for tooth wear or a night splint. Dr Kirk will tell you if that's where to start, and the consultation looks at what else may be contributing.
A square or heavy jaw
Some people come in because their lower face looks heavier, wider or more square than they'd like. Jaw shape comes from bone, muscle and soft tissue, and which matters most differs from person to person. It can be looked at on its own or alongside clenching.
What the consultation covers
- Your history of clenching, grinding, jaw ache or headaches
- Your jaw shape and the rest of the lower face
- Whether a dentist or another practitioner is the better first step
- Time to ask questions before anything is decided
Assessed, not assumed
Your history, your jaw and what you're hoping to change shape the advice.

Common questions
Should I see a dentist first?
Often, yes, especially for tooth wear or a night splint. You don't need a referral to book, and Dr Kirk will tell you if a dentist is the better place to start.
Is this about jaw ache or jaw shape?
Either or both. Some people come in about clenching or jaw ache, others about a jaw that looks square or heavy. Your consultation covers whichever applies.
What happens at the consultation?
Dr Kirk asks about your history, looks at your jaw and lower face, explains what's suitable, if anything, and talks through risks before you decide.
