In a lot of the industry, the assessment is a quick box-tick on the way to a booked treatment. We do it the other way around: the assessment comes first, on its own terms, and what follows depends on what it finds. This page explains what that involves, and why it sometimes ends in "not this."
Assessment isn't a formality
The assessment comes first and stands on its own. What follows depends on what it finds — sometimes that's a treatment plan, sometimes a recommendation to wait, to try something else, or to not treat at all. All three are legitimate outcomes of doing it properly, rather than a detour on a path that was always heading to treatment.
What a proper assessment involves
A genuine assessment is a medical one. It considers more than the concern you've come in with:
- Your goals — what you're actually hoping for, and whether treatment can realistically deliver it
- Your medical history, medications and anything that affects suitability
- Your facial structure and the anatomy relevant to what you're considering
- Whether the concern you've described is one this treatment actually addresses
Why "not this" is sometimes the right answer
Part of assessing honestly is being willing to decline. If a treatment won't achieve what you're hoping for — or if what you're describing is better addressed a different way, or not at all — the responsible thing is to say so, rather than proceed anyway. A recommendation against treatment isn't a lost sale; it's the assessment working exactly as it should.
The person who assesses you is the person who treats you
At Hillview, your assessment, prescribing decision and treatment are carried out by the same registered medical practitioner, in the one consultation. The judgement formed during your assessment carries directly through to your care — nothing is handed off.
What this means for you
It means you can expect an honest conversation before anything is decided — including, sometimes, the honest answer that treatment isn't right for you. That's not caution for its own sake; it's the standard that makes elective medical treatment safe.
Start with a conversation
Every treatment at Hillview begins with a private medical consultation. There's no obligation to proceed.
